Introducing Viña Don Melchor
With the release of the 2017 vintage, Don Melchor is breaking away from the Concha y Toro portfolio as an independent winery with the aim of underscoring its identity and sense of origin, placing it among the most important wineries in the world.
Don Melchor, the first icon wine of the Chilean industry and a true benchmark among the world’s high-end wines, has reached a major new milestone.
After more than 30 years of history, Don Melchor has separated from the Concha y Toro portfolio to become Viña Don Melchor and face the new challenges of the industry, while always maintaining the highest standards of quality and excellence that have led it to a position among the greatest wines of the world.
“With the creation of Viña Don Melchor, we have our sights set on producing a single wine that is the unique expression of the Puente Alto terroir and to pay homage to this fantastic origin that is able to deliver a wine with personality and matchless, unmistakable expression,” explains Enrique Tirado, who has been the Don Melchor winemaker for more than 20 years and who has taken on this important challenge as the general manager of Viña Don Melchor, backed by his tremendous experience and ability to direct this new company.
According to Tirado, the creation of Viña Don Melchor responds to the interest of adding value to the brand and improving the current distribution channels. “We want to refine the way that Don Melchor is distributed by improving the current channels and focusing on the markets that have large growth potential,” Tirado assures.
The decision to move in a new direction, charting a new and independent route, aims to highlight the maturity of this iconic Cabernet Sauvignon and its ability to express its own identity.
“Separating from Concha y Toro was the logical next step in the growth of Don Melchor, which has operated autonomously in terms of agricultural and enological management for the last 10 years,” Enrique Tirado says.
This enables Viña Don Melchor’s identity to build upon three fundamental pillars: its impeccable heritage and history, its unrivaled terroir conditions; and a deep understanding and mastery of making the Don Melchor wine.
Along with introducing Viña Don Melchor, the brand celebrates its 30 years of history with the release of the 2017 vintage, presented with its new packaging that accentuates its leadership as the great Chilean icon wine from the famous Puente Alto terroir. The label has changed from depicting the entrance to Viña Concha y Toro to show the Don Melchor Casona manor house, a distinctive icon that represents the history of Don Melchor and its legacy, as well as the importance that this wine has had for Chilean viticulture.
The new label aims to provide greater visibility for this element and reinforce the legacy of its origin while placing a special emphasis on the Cabernet Sauvignon variety and particularly, on the Puente Alto Vineyard in its communications.
This vintage is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc and spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 67% first use and 33% second use. The 2017 Don Melchor is an extraordinarily elegant wine with a pronounced presence of red fruits. The palate shows tremendous expression of Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from the Puente Alto Vineyard, with fine, delicate tannins that also contribute great elegance and complexity with remarkable balance, energy, and concentration.
