The Winemaker

“For me, Don Melchor represents the constant search for the best expression of every vine in the vineyard in order to achieve the beauty of balance of the Puente Alto terroir in every vintage. I am truly obsessed with this. I use technology as a tool to obtain a better understanding, but beyond that, observing and truly feeling each plant and wine allow us to reach the perfect balance in every vintage.”

Winemaker Enrique Tirado has had a long and illustrious career at Viña Concha y Toro. After joining the Company in 1995 to lead its premium brands, he was appointed head winemaker of Viña Concha y Toro’s super-premium and ultra-premium labels in 1997, including the company’s icon wine, Don Melchor.

In 1999, Tirado’s uncanny winemaking sensitivity and tireless research into different terroirs led to his appointment as sole winemaker of Don Melchor, sourced from the renowned Puente Alto vineyard in the Andean foothills on the north bank of the Maipo River.

In 1997, Viña Almaviva was created through a joint venture between French winery Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro. Enrique Tirado was named co-winemaker of Almaviva for its debut vintage in 1996, working together with Patrick León, Technical Director of Château Mouton Rothschild, in a partnership which has attracted critical acclaim. Tirado was appointed a director of Viña Almaviva in 2004.

Tirado has also served as co-winemaker for terroir wines at Viña Concha y Toro’s Argentine subsidiary, Viña Trivento, since 2001. The first vintage of Trivento’s icon wine, Eolo, launched in 2005.

Fueled by his passion for the Puente Alto vineyard Tirado conducted the first study of soil and terroir in Chile in 2002, in conjunction with one of the most prestigious academic centers in France, the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (INA P-G). Tirado’s exacting, ongoing research into terroir management combined with the adoption of new vinification technologies has allowed him to achieve the best expression, finesse and elegance from Cabernet Sauvignon. Every vintage of Don Melchor under his guidance has ranked among the finest wines of the year from Chile and has elevated Don Melchor to a privileged place among the world’s finest wines, garnering Tirado an enviable reputation as one of Chile’s most respected winemakers.
